Valentine's Day Rally in Washington Square Park Responds to Radical Hate with Radical Love

Love Rally

More than 20 NYU and community organizations will host a rally in Washington Square Park on Saturday, Feb. 14 from 1-3 p.m. to bring together diverse communities and focus on love triumphing over hate.

The love rally, organized in part by the Project for the Advancement of our Common Humanity (PACH) at NYU, will gather world leaders, interfaith leaders, musicians, spoken word poets, students, activists, and policymakers for an afternoon of readings, remarks, and performances all focused on love and our common humanity.

“Valentine’s Day is often defined by commercialism and romantic love. But the love we need right now in our hate and violence filled world is not simply romantic love, but love of our common humanity,” said Niobe Way, the founder of the PACH and professor of applied psychology at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. “We need to support leaders, such as the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, who lead with love and respond to hate and violence with love, rather than more hate and violence.”

Select notable speakers at the rally include Leymah Gbowee, Liberian peace activist and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize; Sarah Sayeed, Senior Advisor in the Community Affairs Unit, New York City Mayor’s Office; and Adama Dieng, United National Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide. For a current list of speakers, performers, and additional information, please visit the event's Facebook page.

Reporters are invited to attend, and should RSVP to Rachel Harrison in NYU’s Office of Public Affairs at 212.998.6797 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

PACH, a think-and-do tank at NYU funded by the NoVo Foundation, aims to integrate, generate, and communicate evidence about our humanity, the forces that disrupt it, and the means to reconnect to each other so that we may live in a more just and humane world.
